Pre-9/11, my former wife got waved through immigration w/o a glance after INS heard her southern accent. I got stopped when I truthfully told where I was born (at a US naval base overseas) so I guess he was taken aback for a second but I had my official government ID with me and was waived through when he saw the seal on the cover.
