Nope, $37,000.

It was a different time though. In those days it was not uncommon to pay thousands of dollars for a last minute mid-week trip from YVR-YYZ. I remember walking up to the CP counter in YYZ one day and forking over more than $2200 for a one-way walk up YYZ-YVR ticket. And for my first few years of flying my annual spend was typically $45,000 to $50,000.

That was much of the driving force behind the development of the Mexican Hat Dance.

Then with the quadruple blow of 9-11, SARs, Iraq, and who knows what else, in the early 2000s air fares suddenly became a lot more rational. Starting sometime about 2003 it became extremely difficult to spend that kind of money. Lots of people got SE status for much less than $10,000 and they weren't necessarily "gaming the system." Air fares just got so cheap people kind of fell into status.
