Booking classes when involuntarily rebooked

Hi,

Thinking of a missed connections, or a flight canceled due to a technical. You are at the gate, but you can't board. Ground staff hands you a bording pass for a different flight so you get to your destination eventually.

How is the booking class (not cabin class) determined for the new flight? Are there rules or regulations? Do they just grab any seat that shows open (and is not below your original booking class)? Does it depend on the new flight's carrier?
