Best budget destination in Africa for 1st timers?
Hello,
I'm a bozo and someone is going to flame me for posting such a subjective question. lol... Anyhow...
I am looking for recommendations on the best country/countries to spend about a month in Africa. We have never been and we will be traveling on a budget (backpacking) as part of a RTW trip.
Here are our priorities:
1. Safety, less hassle (Americans who have never visited the continent)
2. Budget
3. Unique Experiences
We are possibly planning on coming from and/or going to Europe before/after. So, I think the cheapest destination would be Morocco, because we can hop across from Spain. We would use less FF miles. However, I'm afraid that that might be more of a European experience than an African experience.
Other ideas that I've had:
South Africa to Vic Falls. But, I think that will be much more of a hassle. Visa, lengthy travel, vaccinations. All things that we wouldn't have to worry about in Morocco. On the plus side, wild life would be awesome. We could drive through a national park ourselves.
Ethiopia. I've heard really good things and that it's very backpacker friendly. However, I haven't found too much good information and specific reasons to go. Also, I'm not interested in going to any of the neighboring countries.
So, I'm looking for recommendations. Where do you recommend for a backpacker/budget friendly destination that will be a unique African experience?
side note: Our potential travel plans are...
USA -> Spain (proxy to africa) -> Africa -> Eastern Europe. OR
USA -> Africa -> Eastern Europe OR
USA -> Eastern Europe -> Africa -> Asia
Thanks FT!
