How picky is AA about checked baggage weight?

I literally never check bags so this is new territory for me.

I need to check a bag tomorrow LAX-JFK and may be close to or just over 50lbs, which appears to be the limit on a per bag basis.

Just curious:

1. Does AA weigh very carefully at check-in?
2. Does being EXP give me a larger allowance in any way?

I'm traveling internationally, but have this single domestic leg on AA, which makes it a bit challenging. It's pretty tough for me to take a second bag to distribute the weight. In fact, my one bag won't even be full. I've contemplated putting some of the items in a packable duffel and, if asked to lighten the load, can just pull that out as a small carryon.

However, if the feedback from the group at large is that it may not be a big issue, I'd be even happier!
