Indeed, but this is a different approach and not guaranteed. If you want to be sure to fly in J (in advance), then you change your ticket, pay the difference in fare + change fees. This will be expensive in the OP's case but he's sure to fly J if that's what he wants.
Or you wait to see at the airport or at OLCI if you can benefit of a targeted paid upgrade as you suggested. It will be cheaper but, from Y to J, you can expect something around 600-700 Euros one-way and no guarantee at all.
