1. They're not "fuel surcharges" any more, it's a "carrier charge". Nothing to do with fuel. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...urcharges.html for recent discussion of this with some examples showing how crazy the numbers are.

2. BA decide how high this charge is, although you can safely assume it's as least as high as the operating carrier's actual charge.

If you're left feeling slightly ripped off, join the club!

EDIT: for US and AA TATL redemptions BA make sure the YQ is bumped up to around the level they charge on their own metal, otherwise no-one would redeem on BA metal ever again
