If you plug your AA booking number into the flights section of the US iPhone app it will change it to the U.S. number and from there you can change seats to any you wish except the prime seats which are extra. You can then also use this app when checking in so that you can have the phone based boarding pass. It's all pretty easy and I've been treated well for seating both as an AA Gold and Platinum.
