IMO, it is not worth obtaining a level of status if you can't maintain it, therefore I would suggest holding short of PM and being assured of requalifying for GM again next year. That way if you travel decreases slightly your are ok and if something were to cause an increase in your travel patterns (new job, new contract, new line of business) you will make an easy jump up another level in status that you would then be able to maintain.
