Lines at check-in, lines at immigration, if it's international and you are headed to the US there may be additional security at the gate, etc. I'd rather sit at the gate or in the lounge for an hour than cut is so close I'm worried about making the flight. Travel can be stressful in the best of times. No sense inviting more stress.
