No, I'm not currently an elite. Been close in the past and finally just going for it.

Yes, I'd be willing to take smaller trips.

I have a business trip next week (DFW) and I'm currently being offered 5000 pqm for ~$500 total (fluctuating - that seems pretty steep), so I can outright purchase miles if I can't book a cheap enough flight. But I'd rather fly!
