I got lucky on an LAS-SEA last year with a companion. Having top tier for upgrades has its advantages.

And this is where I get irked at DL elites. AS upgrades them up to 48 hours out. These upgrades impede our chances during SDC for upgrades. Whereas AS elites don't get upgraded until boarding commences if there are seats, giving DL elites ample time to SDC to different DL flights and secure those upgrades.
