The father was not asking to use an SWU ... simply asked to have his kid moved to the top of the standby list as he held out his wallet and ExPlat card. I stood there and watched the kids name pop up - it looked like jeff something. It was at Gate G-17, one of those crowded, dark little downstairs bus gates... disgusted, we walked down to Frontera, came back an hour later and rode home reasonably comfortably in exit row seats. All's well that ends well I suppose, but it left a not unfamiliar bad taste in my mouth.
Was the kid already on the list before moving up? Maybe he had an F ticket and got rebooked in Y due to an IRROP or something and his name wasn't added to the upgrade list earlier. I don't think gate agent can change the order of the list, maybe I am wrong. Will check when I fly tomorrow.
