So what I'm not clear on coming from UA (and being an EXP years ago and now an EXP again) is...

If you do OLCI and confirmed that you will be added to airport standby list for an upgrade, is there any chance the upgrade will process before gate agent takes over flight. More refined: do upgrades happen after OLCI/23hr 59 mins before flight automatically or are they all held in Airport Standly list/PALL and no auto processing happens ever until agent starts working the flight?

I see info in this thread that implies above then contradicts later...
