If you are flying 2-3 times a year and spending about $1000 per ticket, I think you are best off forgetting about FF programs and making your purchases based on cost, schedules, and quality of service.
For about 15 years I have been Silver, Gold, or Platinum. I am Gold right now, have made two flights from TLV to Europe this year and am going to fly Delta to Las Vegas in December (on a Biz Elite award ticket). I will reach zero status in 2015 but as I am not planning on any more flights to the US it will not impact me.
I will be flying more often to Europe (3 to 4 times per year) and these flights, for me, is about the equivalent of what a domestic trip is for you. I am not going to concern myself about ff programs as I am not going to be in the air enough to earn status anywhere.
