Not true for DL flights, although there might be some LCCs that have this as their rule.

DL ADVISES pasengers to arrive at most airports 75 minutes before departure for domestic flights, but the rule is either 30 or 45 minutes at most USA airports, including for domestic flights connecting to international. For international, the cutoff is one hour at most locations.

The last time I was at LAX, check in was an absolute mess with long lines of kettles preventing access to the SkyPriority area. People were lined up on the sidewalk the length of T5 with the lines then snaking around inside.
