If you use your inbox as a quasi to-do list, this paradigm just doesn't work. It's also an extension of the original GMail premise of "Don't delete, Archive" in which nothing is deleted (meaning there's more data for them to forage for smart notifications, analytics, and other snoopy-type activities). You really have to shift how you think about email to a large degree for Inbox to work, it seems.
The problem is that you really don't see what's new until you open each folder (Promos, Updates, etc..). The pictures from emails take up most of the screen on the first page (and I have a big phone, note 2) leaving you just half a line showing you the senders of the new emails.

For example, under Updates I would see

DONOTREPLY, Amazon.com ... 7

I have no idea who sent me an email with return address as DONOTREPLY and no idea what the email from Amazon.com is about. But more importantly, I have no idea what are in the other 5 emails that are not showing. So I am forced to do another click to check. Now if I see things I want to delete, I have to click to select, click menu, click delete.

So I need to click 4 times to delete an email in Inbox. If I open up Gmail, I see all 7 emails each with 2 lines of contents on the same page (no clicking). Select and Delete.
