Even more surprising that SQ itself is quite a bit above that culture. The airline is a fair bit superior to Changi and I always wondered how that has happened.

If you fly a SIN based airline, yes. I had numerous encounters with UA where when I had the leverage (seat change, re-routing etc), the sup had to call the US office for a trinket (shower voucher, 1000 RDM or the likes) whereas on the same airline any ground staff in the US has full authority to hand out much greater goodies.
