AC has 8 330s. It still has 20+ 767s that they can transfer at little or no purchasing cost. Heck, they could even keep a few aside for parts. Yes the A330s are younger, but I'm sire they could sell them on the open market and keep the cash.
Common cockpit, yes, but I believe the flight crew still needs to be re-trained and re-certified. So why would they want to add another fleet type and certification level?
AC will be transferring nearly all 763s to Rouge. Rouge is unable to operate any widebody except 763 until AC has 37 787s on property, meaning the A330s can't be transferred until 2019 at the earliest.
The 763s are the best Rouge has for now, but when they can be replaced with the more efficient A330s AC will probably jump at it. Worst case, AC just needs to exercise 8 789 options to replace them.
