I wonder why in America we don't have low cost carriers serving these airports with more direct flights. It would seem a viable option even for business passengers if you don't have to connect.
If LLC's dont fly to smaller markets I'm guessing because that is just one more place that they don't have to pay for staff, gate space, maintenance, fuel, etc.

Take Minnesota, DL can fly you from BJI/INL/HIB/DLH/RST/BRD, as well as FAR/FSD/GFK that are on the boarder and connect you in MSP to your destination.

And if you are a business traveler who is on the road 3 weeks out of 4 if you are going to DLH there is not a lot of appeal in flying to MSP and renting a car and driving 2.5-4 hours OW depending on traffic. So they pay a more to fly much closer to their meeting.

If you are the type inclined to fly NK, you're willing to drive from outstate to MSP to save $. So I guess the second part of my guess is they don't have to.

Also LLC tend to have only 1-2 types of planes, and there probably isnt enough demand in a lot of these smaller towns and cities to fill a 737
