It's up to you what you do after landing - the airline has absolutely no control over your actions. If you want to go landside, just go to UK Border and that's it. When it's time to go back, you pass security and are back airside.

(of course this supposing that you have the neccessary paperwork to enter the UK - passport, visa, etc)
