Historically, LY has pioneered the concept of separation between cockpit and cabin, way before 9/11, knowing that a perfect screening process may not exist and relinquishing control of the aircraft was not an option. Regarding security at the airport itself, it's handled by the police, not the military. BTW, if you go through and of Germany's or Italy's international airports you will see military patrols there, a hold-over from the turbulant 70's.</font>
Having "sealed" doors is pointless if a bullet can get through. The good thing about this directive is that a few more planes (for airlines that fly to Israel) will have a (limited) postive security-spillover internationally.

The reason for the "sealed" doors concept was less to prevent a "hijacking" -- or explicitly a relinquishing of the cockpit controls -- than to isolate hijackers from various communication channels and to secure a line of communication between the cockpit crew and legitimate authorities that could be instrumental to ending a hijacking or "negotiating".
