Well, I was in TLV for business in August, and I can tell you that it DID take me 3 full hours to go though security. I had a 5:30am flight on LH and arrived at the airport about 2:30am, and I barely made the flight!
Let me tell you what they did to me in the name of security...
-They stopped me at the road on the way to the airport to ask me what is my purpose at the airport today.
-They stopped me at the gate of the terminal to ask me what was my purpose in Israel, and to produce proof like hotel bills.
-They asked me in line for the x-ray if anyone gave me anything, did I leave anything unattended, did I accept anything from strangers, then tagged my bags.
-They put all my bags through the x-ray.
-They swabbed my laptop a total of 3 times, each time requesting that I remove some item (battery, drive, until it is a bare laptop) while asking me if I'm the original owner, etc.
-They took my laptop away for additional testing, while emptying all contents of my carry on for examination and swabbing.
-They asked me what is my AA battery charger, where did I get it, does it work, and then x-rayed it, and took it to a room where they DISASSEMBLED it by peeling the silver sticker in the back and PRYING it open with screwdrivers, leaving obvious marks. They returned it to me after deeming it harmless, and it hasn't worked ever since.
-They tell me the laptop must remain for further testing, and will go on the next flight (this is a DAILY flight). It arrived at my home 3 days after me, packed in a cardboard box with NO PADDING.
-With all my belongings out on the table, they tell me, "ok, you can pack everything back now, and please hurry, OR YOU'LL MISS YOUR FLIGHT."
If they send everyone onboard in a rage like I was, they BETTER install bulletproof doors!
