May be a policy but it seems pretty crazy. Why would one even discuss with Hertz where you were going to take the car? Only because you read an old FT thread, and how many renters do that. So on return of the car you are told you violated a policy that you were never made aware of?

I like the suggestion that if you are at all worried about souring your relationship with Hertz, just do this rental from someone else.
