Anyone who travels in the midwest in the summer time knows that if there is a thunderstorm near an airport, no outside work goes on at the gates until the lightning leaves the area which in turn means no planes can be waived in or pushed out for departure.

That in turn cascades into the delay you experienced.

Same thing happens at early fall college football games, if there's lightning with in a few miles of the stadium the game is halted until 30 minutes after it leaves.

Neither situation is fun
