You also referred to "family" and the trip coming back home which gives me the impression that you were thinking of using the 4 certs on the way back home. If I understand the certs correctly, you can only use on yourself + 1 companion on the same PNR. So, even if you were able to get upgrade seats to open up on your flight, you would only be able to apply 2 of the certs on 2 passengers.
