Just to be precise, I take it that OP is on a "connection" not a "stopover". There is no such thing as a layover. With that in mind, he can through check his bags to his final destination and nobody (other than UK authorities) will even know that he has left the airport.

The exception is overnight, however that is defined by each carrier. Most will not check bags on connections overnight and at least you cannot count on it.
