I do see what you are saying, the lack of a formal check may seem odd, but if there was one, and you had a problem with status, surely it would be too late to do anything about it?

My concern is that I don't want to be accused of illegally entering the country the next time I seek entry through a regular channel (that is, arriving from outside the UK/Ireland) or apply for a visa.

The logic dictates that if the UK Government wanted arrivals from Ireland to go through immigration they would not be allowed to arrive as domestic pax; however, as this is not the case and flights from Ireland do arrive as domestic ones then the passengers who do require UK immigration screening (both visa and non-visa nationals) should not be penalized in any manner for following the suggested arrivals route. Complete lack of information in this regard makes it even more frustrating... Or, perhaps, this is all in my head and the majority of people would just follow the signs and not give it another thought...
