Not really necessary, but if you want peace of mind bring a copy of TIMATIC and a copy of the TWOV explanation from the Chinese embassy.
I didn't have any issues departing the USA, but not all airlines are good at entering the TWOV notification in advance of travel. This doesn't really matter, but it can add a few minutes (like three or four) if you arrive and Chinese immigration isn't expecting you.
