Hi Alex,

The British Airways credit card is issued by AMEX and therefore you would only have ever received an AMEX card, not a visa.

I think you may be getting confused with the MBNA issued airline credit cards, which usually come as a pair (AMEX and Visa).

I'm also not sure your idea will work. Usually when you get a refund, the avios are also taken back. I'll have to admit I haven't tried what you are suggesting before so I have no idea if it will actually work. My advice would be not to risk it.

In terms of spending on the AMEX, realistically these days, most places that you will spend a significant amount will accept it (supermarket, petrol, travel, restaurants, bars etc.). Headforpoints is also a great blog for tips. Otherwise you may have to consider changing your spending habits if you really want to get that bonus.
