it still goes off of your status for automatic upgrades. but the list for airport controlled upgrades goes off check in time. the earlier you check in at T-24h, the higher up on the list you will be.
For AA, this has not been the case for several years.
AA used to process upgrades w/in 24 hrs based on check in time. Not anymore. You retain your request time - but the list updates continually. Here's an example:
Pax A: PLT requests on 7/1, checks in at T-24
Pax B: EXP requests on 9/1, checks in at T-23
Pax C: EXP requests on 8/1, checks in at T-3
At T-24, Pax A would be first on the list
At T-23, Pax B would be first, Pax A would be second
At T-4, app shows upgrade list: #1, Pax B, #2, Pax A
At T-3, app shows upgrade list: #1, Pax C, #2, Pax B, #3 Pax A
