We have had a checking account with statements online with a small Wells Fargo branch in the US Southwest for several years and a debit card.

Recently we decided to apply for a credit card with them, and it was processed with little trouble. Our checking account is online and we have linked our credit card to it. We receive e-mail notification prior to the bill’s due date, and transfer funds electronically from our account. Caveat – we do have both U.S. Soc. Sec. No.s and a banking history with them. However, the bank also told us they routinely processed credit cards for foreign students attending a local college, so it’s not impossible.

As marbuck pointed out, we have seldom experienced a problem using the debit card just like a credit card for everything from buying gas at the pump to airline tickets, so that might be a more practical alternative for you.

Cheers,
Fredd
