I would suggest the following:
1. J
2. All Altitude Super Elite and Elite members (SE, E75, E50, E35, E25)
4. Star Alliance Gold members
5. Star Alliance Silver members
6. General boarding
This is pretty granular. Now - I know that certain flights are really full of priority pax (YYZ-NYC / certain morning flights in the triangle and trans-con) - but - the zone boarding has to be made so that it works for the whole system the same. Thus - I would not expect so many groups of priority. Also - one of the main reasons for the zones is to make the boarding faster, and not just to give certain pax priority.
My thoughts on this would be.
1.) Top priority - SE / J. (Can't see it being much better than this).
2.) All the *G level such as E75, E50, *G and AC's Silver cards P35, P25.
3.) Zones based on seat location ( window / aisle - back to front).
On the group of people in #2. The number of *G passengers on any flight is usually very small. AC also can't design a process to "screw" *G just because A3 is a ridiculously qualification process. Also - unless AC wants to eliminate any perks for their silver cards, I can't see them doing away with these people also being in the group #2.
I do however see a benefit of splitting #1 and #2 as the number of people in group #2 on some flights could be 50 in addition to the people in group 1.
We'll see how it goes. If anyone sees it in action - post an update.
