Runway closure threatens South Pacific flights

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Aviation between Asia and North America, particularly involving twin-engine aircraft and executive jets, is heading for major disruption at the end of the month as Washington budget cuts force the closure of a crucial runway.

Midway Island runway, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, will close shortly before Johnston Atoll airstrip ceases operations at the end of the year, threatening air services between the South Pacific and North America.</font>
