Delta isn't 'putting' any adult into a hotel room. It is paying for accommodation that one can choose to use - or not. Hypothetical exchange:
Traveler: A shared room? No thanks. I'll hang out at the airport for the night.
Agent: You're on your own. The airport closes at 2AM. Please be at the gate 45 minutes before departure - and we're not sure what time that will be.
I get that, but DL didn't give any other options either - i.e. Book your own hotel and be reimbursed by DL. If the airport closes at 2am like you stated (which I wasn't aware of), what choice does the passenger have at that point? With such limited options I'd say DL (for all intents and purposes) did put/leave these passengers with the hotel being their only viable choice.
