It would seem like DL or any other airline would be putting themselves in a position to potentially have a lawsuit brought against them if something like rape, battery, theft occurred between these strangers. Also, I assume they paired same sex partners, which would take some coordinating. I imagine there were several lucky individuals who got their own rooms.
There can be rape or sexual assault even if the genders are the same.
On an international flight, gender is part of the secure flight data, which DL might be able to access. Otherwise, it can be difficult to know the gender from a person's name.
