It is great to have dreams of travel and seeing the world but doing it responsibly seems like a wise choice as well.
If securing sign on bonus points for getting a new credit card is needed that badly to make the trip, it may be time to consider whether you should be going.
It depends on the circumstances. Some fields have regular and predictable periods of unemployment. I would use those times to travel extensively and using miles was the easiest and cheapest way. Of course I had savings to burn as well.

Among the three other times I did this, I was unemployed for a year a bit ago waiting for my current job to start (was on hold from sequester/budget fight.) It was cheaper to travel throughout eastern europe then to continue living where I was, plus a great opportunity.
