New EP requirement screw hub city dwellers
I am really upset about the new 120 segment requirement to reach Executive Platinum.
I live in Dallas and fly weekly to Illinois. My client won't pay for anything but coach. So, no bonus points, relatively low mileage left me with the option of hitting 100 segments per year to gain Executive Platinum. It was a stretch, but I could make it most years including personal trips, etc.
There is no way I can make 120 segments a year, so although I still fly AA each week, have been a Aadvantage member over 30 years and have over 3 million miles in the program I'm no longer going to be top tier. I loose very real benefits such as having top priority when rebooking is necessary due to cancelled flights, no charge for same day flight changes and extra options when redeeming points for flights.
The kicker is that people who fly weekly with me from connecting cities (Tulsa, Austin, etc) will still be EP with only 30 trips a year because 120 segments are still within their reach. To add insult to injury, the fare for these flights (TUL-DFW-BMI) are typically LESS than what I pay, even though they are flying on the same DFW-BMI flight I am. So, less revenue for American, added cost for American, but these folks will be considered top tier and I'm not. I'm not faulting these connecting travelers - I think they should be top tier. I'm faulting American for setting up a structure that works this way.
