If your connection exceeds 24 hours you will also be charged the UK Aii Passenger Duty, for departure which will make your trip more expensive.

Now, we've overnighted often in the UK on paid and award flights, using "LIFO" - arrive on a flight that arrives later than your next possible flight out (last in first out), and that seems to work. E.g. LAX-LHR 77W, overnight, next day LGE-VCE.
Don't you have up to 24 hours to connect on an international award? If so, LIFO should not be required.
