OMG - the other ticket that showed "on hold" on aa.com got rejected and I just got a call from AA. Apparently, the 24hr rule cannot be waived...and was rebooked on JL departing TYO a day later than originally scheduled. Maybe I'll get another call from AA saying that my "ticketed" award is void as well
