I just called up AA to reconfirm my new itinerary but was told that they would require additional miles because of the stopover!! Although when I called them a while back (months ago) when I first found out about the flight cancellation, AAgent was ready to reissue the new tickets without additional miles. So I wonder what their official policy is in this case?

I already have booked a hotel in HK and bought a flight ticket for another family member (elderly and cannot stay in HK by herself) to mirror this change, so we really need to stay overnight in HK. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me suggestions/answers.
Thanks
I'm surprised this itinerary was originally ticketed, as US to EU via HKG requires indeed two awards. It isn't a matter of the stopover - its the routing.
What does your ticket status on aa.com say: Pending, On request or ticketed? If pending/on request then you are absolutely going to have to rebook w/more miles, etc.. If ticketed you *might* be OK - but, frankly, if you don't get this fixed now you may be SOL at the airport.
If AA agrees to a free change - then its going to be on a legal routing, meaning US to EU direct. They aren't going to be able to make CX accept the mistake.
