I just called up AA to reconfirm my new itinerary but was told that they would require additional miles because of the stopover!! Although when I called them a while back (months ago) when I first found out about the flight cancellation, AAgent was ready to reissue the new tickets without additional miles. So I wonder what their official policy is in this case?

I already have booked a hotel in HK and bought a flight ticket for another family member (elderly and cannot stay in HK by herself) to mirror this change, so we really need to stay overnight in HK. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me suggestions/answers.
Thanks
I am confused. If you knew months ago and AA agreed to reticket, why didn't you reticket then? It is absurd AA would ask you for miles due to the other carrier canceling.
Options- As I see them:
1. You and AA agree on a free change
2. You and AA agree on the additional miles
3. You cancel and rebook. Flight cancellation means you can redeposit miles free.
I have one point of confusion. Did you book JFK-HKG-Europe on one award? Awards from US to Europe cannot go through Asia
Your profile says you are from NYC.. Where is the ticket starting from?
