Taxis are also expensive and service is often non-existent (or worse). Plus on most routes it's slow....
Yes, the cultural reference, was to the fact that it's a "bike culture." It could be argued that there are many other cities with great public transportation, which do not have anywhere near the extensive use of bicycles.
Most of my Dutch friends complain (perhaps believe) the public transportation in Amsterdam is crap, but their ability to bike is awesome. I've yet to hear many "rave" about public transportation in Amsterdam. But, I do agree with you, I think it's a fine, and above average system.
Amsterdam is also a rather small city, so that helps with regard to bikes and public transportation.
