Even as AA nothing I always had 'C' class confirmed from the waitlist when upgrading with Avios on JFK-LAX-JFK and LHR-JFK-LHR flights a few days before departure.

It is of course a good advice to pick flights with confirmed 'C' availability but as my dates/flights are always fixed I have to book specific flights an then hope for 'C' class to open up (same as on BA when upgrading from WTP to CW).
