Gig- unless you are EXP, I suggest only buying a seat after you have confirmed upgrade space is available on AA. You dont want to pick a date, buy coach, request and upgrade...and wait all the way up until the day of departure to find out you didnt clear the wait list.
Select routes withstanding (LAX-LHR and DFW-HKG stand out), even Plats often don't have trouble clearing eVIPs/mileage upgrades. I've never missed at Plat.
That said, I agree with you advice to try to confirm ahead of time, but at the same time I'd be pretty confident of clearing a Plat, select routes/travel periods withstanding (e.g. I wouldn't expect to clear flying MIA-CDG around Christmas time).
