It all depends on your frame of reference. The only way to solidly get >1 cpm value is redeeming for J, IME. When booking Y (which is what my miles get used for, coach seats for the SO+kids to Europe), you really have to work at it.

In the past I have encountered occasions where trying to get >1 cpm (especially when looking for 3 award seats) when redeeming was such a PITA and only offered maybe 0.1-0.2cpm incremental. In that case it simply wasn't worth my time and the PWM option was a decent redemption rate.

Very interested to see what 2015 brings in terms of award redemptions. Not holding my breath, but I would certainly welcome some added value in Y redemptions.
