Would you use 40k miles to reduce fare by $400?
Does anyone ever think this is worth doing?

I spotted a first class fare from JFK to LHR for $2,400.

I can bring down the price to $2,000 by using 40,000 SkyMiles for $400 off in cash.

Is this a good deal or a waste of those miles?

It sounded to me like the cash fare WAS a good deal, but what about using points to slightly lower the price?
