South Sudan is now a separate country; and yes it is having its troubles at the moment.
Just by the way, if you do go there - we found everybody very welcoming and helpful (typical arab/muslim hospitality to strangers); we walked the streets near our hotel in the evenings and felt completely safe.
Even the traffic wasn't too bad; way better than Cairo!
