When we spent our few days in KRT, in April 2013, just about everybody else in the hotel were aid workers - either heading in to Darfur, which is in the West, or heading out.
We got friendly with a young Canadian guy who worked for the World Food Program (IIRC). His 3-month tour of duty in Darfur was over, he was in town for a couple of days of de-briefing, and then he said he was off to Amsterdam and he was going to party, party, party
South Sudan is now a separate country; and yes it is having its troubles at the moment.
Just by the way, if you do go there - we found everybody very welcoming and helpful (typical arab/muslim hospitality to strangers); we walked the streets near our hotel in the evenings and felt completely safe.
Even the traffic wasn't too bad; way better than Cairo!
