From what AA SFO told me today, the US code will cease in April. Already most (all??) US and AA flights have the same flight numbers, just codeshared as needed. (eg, US5537 codeshared AA5537)

I have a few US-operated flights and probably BA 2 that could conceivably be taken as codeshares with AA, if that makes any difference. (And indeed if codesharing is even permitted.)
AA will take codeshares. They don't care if all 6 possible north american flights are on AA codes, they look for an AA code on the Asia/SWP-North America, North-South America and/or North America-Europe sectors.

Most likely reason is that the intercontinental segments are worth more of the ticket cut then the intracontinental segments. (eg, the cut of the ticket price paid out to each airline for a JFK-LHR is more then a BOS-LAX flight)
